Tips and tricks for uplifting your kitchen are all over the web, and there’s never been a better time to give new life to the center stage of your home. However, most of these kitchen facelifts involve a lot of remodeling, time, and money, which can quickly turn your project into a drag.

The kitchen should be a place that’s welcoming and refreshing to be in, and MudPaint wants to help with that! With our signature thick and creamy paint, you can cover your cabinets and get a brand new look in days, not months. And because MudPaint is much cheaper than the typical kitchen remodel, you’ll have this new look at a fraction of the cost. MudPaint is eco-friendly, LEED-compliant and it’s unique, clay-based formula with natural earthen materials requires little prep work and no waxing for a smooth coat.  to turn your kitchen into a showstopper? Just follow our simple steps to achieve a brand new place!

If you want to get the exact color of the cabinets in this picture, use a combination of Forest Green and Stone. But MudPaint Clay Furniture Paint has so many different colors, we encourage you to think outside the box – why not try Harbor for a nice, nautical look? Or Pebble for an earthy feel? There’s so many more options, so feel free to explore – and write to us here for a FREE MudPaint Color Card!

Because we’re painting on kitchen cabinets, instead of a dresser or a chair, a couple things are different. But don’t worry – it’s super easy. For this project, you’ll need:

First – MudPaint in your favorite color

Second – 50/50 Solution of Vinegar and Warm Water, TSP Substitute, or a degreaser

Third – A pad or 2 of our Sanding Pad

Fourth – Painter’s Tape

Fifth – Brush

Finally – you’ll need some of our Top Coat – (and head on over for a quick overview of how to apply it!)

Step One. It’s critical to be sure that your cabinets are sparkling clean.  We are increasingly recommending just plain water or -if it’s been a very long time – any other degreaser that you have. Once your cabinets are free from grease and all cleaned up, you’re ready for the next step!

Step Two. Now, you’re going to undo all the hard work you’ve done to clean those cabinets smooth, and get out the sanding Pad. Gently rough up all surfaces of your cabinets, to ensure that the paint will last for years to come on your cabinets.

Step Three. Gently wash your cabinets with a damp rag to remove any dust that was created from sanding them down.

Step Four. Cover all door knobs, hinges, countertop edges, and other places you don’t want to get painted with the painters tape. Also, cover your countertops to avoid any spills.

Step Five. MudPaint Clay Furniture Paint doesn’t need a primer – it’s so smooth and thick, you are fine to use it by itself. But, if you’re covering dark cabinets with a lighter color, or painting unstained wood, a primer is recommended. MudPaint works best with cover stain, a water-based primer, or a KILZ product.

Step Six. Paint! Using the color of your choice, cover your cabinets with MudPaint, following the grain of the wood. We recommend using one of our natural bristle brushes for this job, but any brush will work. Be sure to shake you can before painting to ensure a well-mixed and even color.

Step Seven. If you need to apply a second coat to get the color you want, let the first layer dry completely before painting again. Most of our customers find that they only need one coat, but if you are using a lighter color, you might need two coats to finish the job.

Step Eight. Especially in a high-traffic area like the kitchen, you will want to cover the cabinets in our Matte Protective Clear Coat, to make sure that it lasts for years to come. A light layer will do the trick – just something to prevent nicks and scratches.

You will have a beautiful new kitchen space, ready to entertain and welcome people into your home!
