One of the most popular questions we get is how to whitewash. Similar to the weathered, coastal and aged look, a proper whitewashing shows that perfectly weathered look that can add a great look to any piece! Plus, we’ve included a video to guide you through it, step by step!
Step 1: Clean the piece thoroughly to remove and grime and grease.
Step 2: Allow the piece to dry.
Step 3: Sand – using our Rad Pad Sander – to remove any old finish and to prepare for the whitewash look.
Step 4: Wipe with a clean cloth to remove dust.
Step 5: Mix one part MudPaint China White or Faded Gray and one part water.
Step 6: Apply mixture with a brush or rag in long strokes following the wood grain. Work in small sections.
Step 7: While the whitewash is still damp, use a clean cloth to wipe off the excess.
Step 8: Allow the whitewash paint to dry.
Step 9: Repeat steps 6, 7, and 8 until you achieve your desired look.
Step 10: Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.
Step 11: Sand again if desired.
Step 12: Wipe with a clean cloth to remove dust.
Step 13: Finish with a coat or 2 of MudPaint’s Matte Finish Clear Coat. Or, for a bit more sheen use our Clear Finishing Wax and then buff it out! Be sure to clean the wax brush thoroughly so that it can last a long time!
